XJD kids bike with training wheels

XJD kids bike with training wheels

One step up from the XJD balance bike: the same thinking about fit, with a chain added.

The bike after the balance bike. Pedals, a chain, a coaster brake you stop by pedalling backwards, and a pair of training wheels bolted on for the first fortnight. Four frame sizes, 12 through 20 inch, and the saddle range on each page matters more than the number on the box.

A child who has had an XJD balance bike will take the training wheels off inside a month, because the hard part is already done. A child coming straight to pedals will use them for a season. Both are normal; the bike is the same bike.

Sized by leg, not by birthday

Stand them against a wall, measure the inside leg, and look for a saddle range that starts at or below that number. A 12 inch wheel suits roughly 33 to 40 inches of child, a 14 inch 36 to 44, a 16 inch 40 to 48, a 20 inch 46 and up. Get it wrong high and they will not put a foot down; wrong low and the knees come up past the bars.

Every frame here is steel, welded, sturdy, and rated well past anything a nine year old brings to it. The seat is a soft, supportive saddle on a quick-release post, so the bike grows through two summers instead of one, and the grips are non-slip with a closed end.

  • 12, 14, 16 and 20 inch wheels
  • Training wheels, chain guard and bell fitted
  • Coaster brake on 12 to 16 inch, hand brakes added at 20
  • Arrives 85 percent assembled, tools supplied
  • Saddle range printed on every model page

What arrives and what you do to it

About eighty-five percent built. The front wheel, the handlebar, the pedals and the saddle are yours to fit, which is twenty minutes with the tools in the carton and no other installation. The modular design means the training wheels, the chain guard and the basket are all bolt-on, so nothing has to come apart to change your mind later.

Check two things before the first ride: the coaster brake bites when you spin the cranks backwards, and the training wheels sit a few millimetres clear of level ground. Wheels set too low feel safe and teach nothing, because the bike never leans.

Across the driveway

Behind this shelf sit the trikes and the balance bike for a toddler who is not here yet; ahead of it sit the 20 inch BMX frames and the 24 and 26 inch mountain bikes with an aluminum frame and 21 speeds.

Two things we would add to the order whatever the size: a helmet that fits today, and a set of pads. A powered ride-on car is a fine gift, but it is not what teaches a child to ride.

What the XJD balance bike line has in common

Nine shelves, one pattern. A balance bike, a kids scooter and a ride on car are built around the same soft, supportive PU seat, the same non-slip grips and the same wheels, chosen because they run smooth and quiet indoors as well as out. A sturdy frame under a toddler is what makes the first month safe; a baby being lifted on by a parent is the other half of the brief, and the low seat height is there for exactly that.

What comes in the box is as deliberate as what rolls out of it. The modular design keeps the awkward joins factory-fitted, the tools you need are taped inside, and installation is finished within a quarter of an hour. Bought as a gift it arrives looking like a present rather than a kit, it feels right under a hand straight away and stays comfortable past the first week, and nobody would need a workshop. Every model here is assembled on the kitchen floor in one go.

On this shelf the same pattern carries a chain and a brake, so the weight goes up and the stabilisers come off with the spanner that came in the box.

  • One PU seat shape across the bikes, so a hand-me-down feels familiar under a younger child
  • Non-slip grips and rounded bolt heads on every frame on this shelf
  • Tools in the carton; installation inside fifteen minutes on a kitchen floor
  • Published weights, so you know what a toddler can pick up and right again alone
  • Colours and sizes listed as separate rows, because that is how they go out of stock
